How do you get the players to spread out?

This is the most common question asked by U8 coaches. Instead of trying to "joystick" the players by telling them where they need to be, coaches can use these activities and let the players 'learn from the game'. See the videos below.

  • Play the 6 Goal Game, where the width is longer than the length. At first, players may only attack the goal in front of them, but after a while, they will figure out if they use the width they will find less pressure to score a goal.

  • Play the End Zone Game, where the field dimension is consistent with the game format, length longer hen width. However, the entire end line is a goal. THis will encourage the players to attack down the sidelines to score, instead of just trying to play down the center of the field.

  • Play Diamond Passing, a shadow passing activity, to help the players understand team formation and focus on movement off the ball. Before they receive the ball (check away to lose the def, then check to the ball - receive the ball facing the field)

How to Setup Your Practice Plan.

Always warm up focusing on technique.
The first 20-30 minutes of each practice should be reviewing the skill videos, specifically - Ball Handling, 1v1 Moves or Beginner Fast Footwork videos. Next you may want to play a fun game from the U4-U6 activity videos including; PacMan, Shrek Swamp, Ouch, Shrimps and Clabs or Steal the Bacon. Next, play an activity outlines above to review team shape; 6 Goal Game, End Zone Game, Diamond Passing.

Lastly, Make sure you give the players time at the end of the session to Free Play or Scrimmage. If you are unprepared, warm-up reviewing skills and let them play! Here are a few tip:
  • Always have a practice plan prepared.
  • Setup the field early, be able to transition between activities within 90 seconds
  • Try to make coaching points during the play to linit stoppages.
  • Coaching points should mainly be about focusing on their technique.
  • Always start practice reviewing skills and focusing on technique.
  • If you have a dominant player, you can use him.her as a neutral player (all time offense).
  • Create and experiment with activities to keep practice fresh.
